This is Day 28 of the 31 day series on “How backpacking has enriched my daily life.” I expected lightweight backpacking to be a hobby. Instead it has transformed me for the better.
The more I learn about backpacking gear and lightweight travel, the more I can pass on. That makes me really happy, because I love being helpful.
I use to be very intimidated by backpacking gear, because of all of the options! I never thought I’d enjoy talking about gear, but here I am! Now I can’t wait to try out new gear! I find it fun brainstorming with my friends on how to cut weight from their backpacks, like by switching to a lighter tent. I love picturing them being able to hike further and not being as tired, all thanks to a lighter pack.
Now that I know what features and materials to look for in outdoor apparel, I’ve made gear suggestions to my family: I helped my mom pick out an appropriate rain jacket, pants and shoes for our trip to Taiwan during monsoon season and I’ve been teaching two of my cousins the philosophy of lightweight backpacking, going over the importance of carrying the 10 Essentials, offering up pack lists, and giving them gear for their birthday/Christmas presents.
All thanks to a backpacking exercise of trying to make my backpack as light as possible, it gave me the mindset and the inspiration to toss, donate, sell or recycle 2/3 of the rest of my possessions. Decluttering is a passion of mine! Since downsizing my life, I’ve helped out other people with decluttering and organizing their homes. It is incredibly rewarding helping a friend reclaim their space, making it more peaceful and rejuvenating for them.
It’s also been a joy putting together this blog, sharing about lightweight backpacking and eco-friendly travel. And the journey has just begun! Backpacking and travel are such deep topics. Every time I go on a trip I get ideas from my fellow backpackers about new gear and clothes, and better ways of putting together my backpacking system. I am very proud of being apart of this kind and giving community. I love my backpacking family.
